Maniac Monday - Julia's Playlist

The most important rule at Verticity is that we ride to the beat. No matter how you choose to break a sweat, sometimes the hardest part of a workout it staying motivated.  By constantly reaching for a beat or embracing a steady pulse, music can help you reach goals faster or keep a repetitive workout program constantly fun, fresh, and inspiring.

Indoor Cycling

For Verticity classes we use the BPM (beats per minute) of a song to set our RPM (revolutions per minute) or cadence.  For example, Smells Like Teen Spirit is 115 BPM so our riders make 115 pedal strokes in one minute.  We are a rhythm based ride with a goal of motivating you to ride at a harder or faster tempo than you knew you could with bumping tunes. 


Running can be a little more complicated, but to run an 8 minute mile you’ll want to look for songs around 170 BPM (or 85 bpm) like The Pretender by Foo Fighters (170 bpm) or Side to Side by Ariana Grande/Nicki Minaj (85 bpm).  For a 10 minute mile you’ll want to blast songs in the 150 bpm range (or 75bpm).  That would include songs like Dancing in the Dark by Bruce Springsteen or All I Do Is Win by DJ Kahled.

In general, a great workout playlist takes you all over the place, from marches, jogs, and a few sprints.  If you comfortably ride or run at 75bpm/10min mile pace, choosing faster songs is a great way to raise your comfort level and pace scoring you a faster mile time! Okay? Class dismissed.
